Polynesian DNA Just Broke the Timeline — and the Fathers' Line Makes It Worse
Ask the pottery where the Polynesians came from and it says Taiwan. Ask the DNA of the mothers and it says New Guinea — at a date thousands of years too early. Ask the DNA of the fathers and it says Taiwan first, then quietly switches to New Guinea. Three records of one people, three different answers. And in 2026, a family buried together on a strip of Fijian coast fifteen hundred years ago finally helped explain why.

This is the documented story of how human beings reached every speck of land in the largest ocean on Earth. The “Express Train” theory that ruled the textbooks for forty years. The Polynesian Motif — a maternal lineage now dated to about 6,500 years ago near the Bismarck Sea. The seventy-two ancient genomes, including the first ever from Fiji, that revealed not one migration but two, moving at two different speeds. The Long Pause, when eighty generations looked east across empty water and did not sail. The two-hundred-year sprint that reached Hawaii, Rapa Nui and Aotearoa. And the Native American ancestry in Polynesian DNA that proves the Pacific and the Americas met centuries before Columbus.
This is the honest version. The genomes and the contact dates are solid. The chicken bones from Chile are contested, and we say so. The sweet potato is argued over, and we lay out both sides. Who actually did the sailing between Polynesia and South America, the DNA cannot tell us — so we don’t pretend it can. And at the end, we set the genetics beside the record the Polynesians kept themselves, in chanted genealogies, long before anyone could read a genome.

The dates in this video come from published genetic and radiocarbon studies, and several of them carry real uncertainty; where researchers still disagree — the Long Pause, the Chilean chicken bones, the sweet potato, and who sailed between Polynesia and the Americas — the video presents the competing cases rather than picking a winner. Some scenes are dramatized reconstructions of the deep past. Nothing here is ancestry or medical advice, and Stone & Bone does not fabricate evidence.
