Nothing About Ohio's Serpent Mound Makes Sense Anymore — Two Labs Prove It
For more than two centuries, Serpent Mound has been one of North America's most mysterious ancient monuments. But the strangest thing about it isn't the giant serpent shape, the meteorite crater beneath it, or even the theories surrounding its purpose.
It's the fact that we still can't agree on when it was built. https://youtu.be/Qe20MlmBMxc Two teams of professional archaeologists used radiocarbon dating to investigate the mound—and their results landed roughly 1,300 years apart. One study pointed toward around AD 1070, suggesting the Fort Ancient people may have built it. Another study pushed the evidence back to around 300 BC, bringing the Adena culture back into the picture. Both studies produced real evidence. Neither completely solves the problem. And that's where this story gets even stranger. The mound was partially reconstructed in the 1880s by archaeologist Frederic Ward Putnam after years of farming had damaged it. Unfortunately, his excavation trenches weren't precisely recorded, leaving modern researchers with a frustrating problem: how do you date an ancient monument when some of the soil has already been moved around? Then there are the missing pieces. Nineteenth-century maps recorded features that no longer exist. A massive impact crater lies beneath the landscape. Fringe theories have turned the site into everything from an alien landing point to evidence of a lost race of giants. And for generations, the Native American people connected to these earthworks were largely pushed out of the conversation. Today, even the people trying to protect and understand Serpent Mound have to confront an uncomfortable question: What if the truth is something we may never be able to prove without damaging the monument itself? This is the story of the dates, the disputed evidence, the forgotten history, and the people still trying to understand what Serpent Mound really means. And sometimes, the most honest mystery is the one that refuses to give you an answer.
