If You Have O+ Blood, Your Ancestors Weren't Human
Two children arrive at the same hospital with the same deadly malaria. One is far
more likely to survive — and in 2007, researchers finally proved why. It wasn't the treatment. It was blood type.https://youtu.be/hLQbLzoKXOQ
This is the honest story of Type O blood — not the horoscope, not the diet, not
the "you're special" version. The truth is stranger. The most common blood type
on Earth is, at the level of your DNA, a broken gene — a copy of an older gene
that failed, and kept failing, in population after population, for tens of
thousands of years. And it kept winning anyway, because in a world full of
plagues, that broken gene was worth having.
Inside: why group O is 66% less likely to suffer severe malaria (and the elegant
mechanism behind it), why the very same blood pays for that protection when
cholera reaches a river delta, what a stomach bacterium built a docking protein
to grab, and the honest other side of the ledger — the clots and cancers Type O
is actually protected from. Plus the correction almost nobody makes: the Black
Death was never a blood-type event at all — and the study that made headlines
about it is still being argued over by the scientists who ran it.
Your blood type was never a personality. It's a record — of exactly which
diseases your bloodline survived, written before anyone could read it.
⏱ We dig into the mysteries history tried to bury. And we don't make them up.
